Black Broadway in Washington D.C.

Welcome to Black Broadway! Celebrate Black History and explore the musical and cultural heritage of Washington's Greater U Street with author and historian Briana Thomas.

Journey through one of Washington, D.C.'s most historical and unique neighborhoods on a guided walking tour led by local journalist and author of Black Broadway in Washington, D.C., Briana Thomas. With the use of community storytelling and engaging visuals, we will stroll through the Greater U Street area once known as Black Broadway. During this experience you will view one of a kind murals of notable history makers from D.C. native Duke Ellington to the music icon Mile Davis.

You'll learn about the jazz and cultural renaissance that paved the way for today's most famous African American successes, musicians, talents, and heroes. We will reminisce on U Street's vibrant nightlife and flashy attractions as we highlight the entertainment venues such as, the more than 100-year-old Howard Theater and the jeweled Lincoln Theatre, which brought national recording artists like, Billie Holiday and Louis Armstrong, to the corridor during the early 1900s. Keep an eye out for some hidden gems along the way!
