Landmark Lecture: Who Were the Custises?

Join Dr. Cassandra Good and Tudor Place Curator Rob DeHart in conversation about her book “First Family: George Washington's Heirs and the Making of America.”

Apr 08, 2025. 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Listen to Dr. Cassandra Good discuss her book “First Family: George Washington’s Heirs and the Making of America” in conversation with Tudor Place Curator Rob DeHart. The book tells the story of George Washington’s step-grandchildren, the Custises, including Martha Custis Peter of Tudor Place. The Custis siblings used their famous family ties to enhance their power and status, becoming celebrities in a soap opera of their own making. They were also enslavers committed to an expanding American empire. Good and DeHart will focus their discussion on the Peter family and enslaved people at Tudor Place, placing them in the broader context of the complexities of fame, family and race in the 19th century.

Cassandra Good is a historian and writer who serves as Associate Professor of History at Marymount University. She previously worked for the Smithsonian Institution and received her PhD from the University of Pennsylvania. She is the author of multiple scholarly and popular articles, as well as two books. Her most recent book, “First Family: George Washington’s Heirs and the Making of America” (Hanover Square, 2023), was a finalist for the George Washington Prize.
